Role of Plastic in the Lighting Industry

To have comfortable lighting and aesthetically appealing luminaires, plastics play a very important role in reducing glare and increasing the comfort level.

The lighting industry has come a long way as compared to the technology available few years ago. Especially true for indoor lighting, the customers now have a wide range of choices to make in terms of lighting control which includes dimming systems, creation of scenes, multiple controls, etc. These controls have helped our industry to think in terms of energy saving and many corporate houses are implementing the same as a policy. As lighting consumes more than 18 to 19% of the total energy generated and since the demand is going up everyday, the lighting companies have taken the responsibility of introducing energy saving lamps and luminaires in a big way. The customers’ acceptance of these has been very encouraging and in every major project is practically based on the energy conservation benefits.

Classification of Luminaires
Luminaries are broadly divided into two categories, viz. indoor and outdoor. Indoor luminaires are basically manufactured from mild steel, polycarbonate, plastic, acrylic, fibreglass etc. While in outdoor luminaires, most of the housings are made from cast aluminium and aluminium sheets and the covers are generally made of acrylic, fibreglass, polycarbonate, toughened glass, etc. With changing times, the requirement of customers have changed drastically. While lighting was earlier seen as just a requirement, today it is seen as a necessity for better productivity at various levels. Consultants, architects and customers have drawn their own specifications in arriving at their requirements. Every project has different needs and the demand for innovative solutions has driven luminaire manufacturers to improve upon the lighting solution system available with them and come up with latest solutions.
