Energising Solutions with Plastics

For use of polymers as an alternate to existing materials like sheet metal and insulators features like electrical voltage withstand, thermal stability at operating temperatures, tensile strength etc. are factors that would define its acceptability as a replacement.

Inherent features like weather-abil ity and light weight along with the fact that its scrap value is negligible in comparison to metal make it an attractive proposition for use as enclosures for sub-station switchgear, junction boxes, meter boxes, meter covers, switch enclosures and street light looping boxes, say D.R. Sukhtankar & Ricky Uchil in dialogue with ET Polymers

# How can private sector contribute in changing the power distribution scenario in India?
The changing scenario provides an opportunity for active involvement of the private sector in power distribution sector. Private sector would lead to a more effective and result oriented approach towards the functioning of a distribution utility and thus lead to better reliability and over all improvement.

# Which are the major areas in which plastics are used in the power distribution sector? Can you name some types of the plastics used?
Polymers have already emerged as a low cost and easily maintainable alternate to impregnated paper insulation in cables. Initially, PVC and now XLPE are the common insulation medium in power cables. Polymers, with requisite additives can be designed to exhibit properties like fire retardancy, termite resistance, UV resistance etc. and hence are being actively considered as a replacement to sheet metal for equipment enclosures. Inherent features like weather-ability and light weight along with the fact that its scrap value is negligible in comparison to metal make it an attractive proposition for use as enclosures for sub-station switchgear, junction boxes, meter boxes, meter covers, switch enclosures and street light looping boxes. Use of reinforced polymers can also be considered for more robust sub-
