S.K. Mittal, Executive Director, Cosmo Films Ltd., in dialogue with ET Polymers.

Q. Cosmo Films has pioneered manufacture of BOPP films in India. How has the market evolved in the last 20 years? How do you see the future growth?

Cosmo Films Limited started its Infirst BOPP Plant in 1980 with a small capacity of 800 TPA. Our present capacity is 46000 TPA. There has been continuous growth in BOPP market in India. In the last decade several other players have also entered into BOPP business and market is expected to grow at approximately 15% p.a. in the medium term.

Q. Cosmo Films has been recognized as one of best 200 companies out of 19000 listed companies with revenue of less than US $1 billion, outside US. What do you see the main reasons for this success?

During the last five years, we have significantly improved our financial performance through continuous focus on people and processes. We have increased our capacity from 13000 TPA to 46000 TPA during the last three years. Another production line is under commissioning and will be in production by February 2004. We are the largest exporter of BOPP films from India. Over a period of time, we have established our brand name with overseas customers in U.S., Europe and other countries as well as leading FMCG brands in India such as Parle, Britannia, HLL, Coke, Pepsi etc.

Q. We see India as a big exporter and importer of BOPP films. What would be the net trade of BOPP films in India? What are the opportunities of exports and how will imports affect the market?

BOPP film import in India is quite insignificant and the BOPP film industry is a net exporter. Global market continues to grow @ 6% p.a. and hence provides export opportunities. Since we are internationally competitive, we do not see any major import threat.

Q. What is the kind of competition that you face in India and how do you retain your position of leadership in the BOPP film market?

We are retaining our leadership position in the Indian BOPP film market by providing International quality BOPP films to our customers at competitive prices. We have a strong R & D set-up and have been continuously pioneering new BOPP products and new applications to expand the domestic market. We have 8 production lines and are in a position to meet our customer requirements better than our competitors through better quality and service. We continuously have a competitive edge in Indian BOPP film market.
