Rotomoulding
A Promising Present and a Still Promising Future

As the market is expanding, we are giving a thrust that Indian moulders should think beyond the water tank applications.

By using rotational moulding — the process used for manufacturing hollow plastic products, by using additional post moulding operations — complex components can be produced enabling the process to compete effectively with other moulding and extrusion practices, is fast making impact in Indian polymer scenario. Keeping in view fast pace of rotational moulding, the Association of Rotational Moulders International (ARM) started the India division. The theme of 1st Annual India Division Rotomoulding Conference held in New Delhi was‘Technology and opportunities to advance mouldings’ wherein, technical experts from rotational moulding industry disseminated information on future of rotomoulding in India. Joseph Strzegowski, President, ARM International spoke to Priyanka Srivastava of ET Polymers, excerpts of the interview.

What propels you to open a new ARM in India and what was the response?
India has been making effective use of rotomoulding in manufacturing water tanks and its accessories. Intention behind starting the ARM is to form a new team of board members who would expand new technologies of rotomoulding to Indian entrepreneurs. The response was overwhelming as Indian moulders were enthusiastic and showed up at the conference in large numbers in Mumbai as well as in New
Delhi. The aim was to advance the state of rotomoulding in India. The participants took time out to network with the fellow moulders, suppliers, design, educators and presenters.

What are the new applications developed in the rotational moulding sector?
The rotomoulding industry worldwide has undergone a revolution as this process has an endless list of applications. We have efficiently made use of rotomoulded plastics in the manufacturing of chemical tanks, fuel tanks, furniture, automotive parts, telephone booth to something as small as toys, dairy cans, coke ice-boxes etc.

What is India’s position as far as the rotomoulding industry and industry advancement in concerned?
So far as the technology is concerned, India is still far behind. Indian moulders are using some basic equipment only because of its limited equipment in the Indian market, till now. As the market is expanding, we are giving a thrust that Indian moulders should think beyond the water tank applications. It is only by introducing innovative ideas that the Indian markets can be intensified. As Indians now have more disposable income, we do see a possibility of major growth in the market and room for growth of the rotomoulding sector. The most important facet, which will eventually change the market scenario, is the education that is imparted to the Indian moulders.

Which end use applications have seen major developments in
Rotomoulding?

At the international level, agriculture is seen as the major market for the rotomoulding applications. Besides making its use in chemical tanks, water tanks manufacturing and material handling products, the US and European market is turning towards manufactur-
