Packaging gets Synonymous
with Plastics

Packaging is a strategic business tool & plastics has been a key enabler to deliver required results.

Rapid growth in flexible packaging, rapid innovation and increased demand ensures that no one in packaging can ignore flexibles, says Rajiv Dhar in dialogue with ET Polymers.

* Please give us an overview of the Indian Packaging Industry. How has it come up in the last 5-10 years? Has there been any radical changes?
Packaging is a strategic business tool; it’s the key to developing, building and enhancing the product characteristics thereby increasing the value realization. It’s no wonder, therefore, that the Packaging Industry is a giant. World wide it’s worth is estimated at Rs 27,800 billion per annum, and, although the Indian Packaging Industry accounts for only Rs 650 billion, it’s nevertheless regarded as the Industry with great potential with an estimated annual average growth of around 15%. During the last decade the industry has definitely grown exponentially and one can clearly witness radical quality improvements and better technology adoption. Today, even at town and village places, retail outlets are stacked with packaged stores, though many of them are not necessarily branded.

* Can you please highlight the latest developments in the flexible and rigid packaging sectors?
Rapid growth in flexible packaging, rapid innovation and increased demand ensures that no one in packaging can ignore flexibles. Key developments in flexibles are providing the customer and the consumer with better shelf-life, better functionality and better image within a better price. Selective barrier properties along with other special features continue to be an area of scientific focus with many new developments like Nanocomposites, biodegradable thermoplastic copolymers, micro perforated films, smart films, PVOH Biaxially oriented films with Si Ox2 coatings etc. In rigid packaging, PET is a very high growth area. High barrier multilayer PET or PP containers in attractive shapes with various printing and sleeving options are
