Plastics:
Material of Choice for the Infotainment Industry
PThe
key Lies in offering more value driven products at more affordable
prices. This will only be possible by replacing old, bulky and inefficient
material with the modern, lightweight and more efficient plastics.
About
Plastics
The
word plastic comes from the Greek word "plastikos", meaning
mouldable. A symbol of modernity and human progress, the invention
of plastics has, un-urguably, touched more lives then any other technological
breakthrougf in the history of mankind. It has replaced old and bulky
things, with the modern and lightweight ones. In fact, todays
life without plastics is incomprehensible. We all know the many ways
that plastics contribute to our health, safety and peace of mind.
The first man-made plastic was invented in the year 1862 by Alexander
Parkes. This was an organic material derived from cellulose that once
heated could be moulded and this material retained its shape when
cooled. Parkes claimed that this new material could do anything that
rubber was capable of, and also at a lower price. Since plastic is
easy to manufacture, strong and durable, and is a good insulator to
boot, it has made inroads against such traditional materials as natural
fibers, wood, metal and rubber. In many cases, the more traditional
products have moved up market, while plastic has cheerfully occupied
many humdrum, unglamorous niches. Cheap toys, cheap fabrics, cheap
furniture, casing, decorations, all are within the purview of this
versatile product.
Role of Plastics in Modern Life
Over the decades, plastics have grown into a major industry that affects
millions of lives worldwide. From providing comfortable lifestyle
to facilitating the production of new products and cutting edge technologies
to making things like televisions, cars, airconditioners, refrigerators
and computers possible, the application of plastics are endless. It
is in the airbag that protects us and it is the mobile phone that
connects us. From toys to spacecrafts, from horseshoes to sports cars,
from construction of buildings to replacing the worn-out body parts
and enabling people to live longer lives; plastic has entered our
lives in every possible manner you can imagine. Hence, since 1976,
plastic has been the most used material in the world and was voted
one of the top 100 news events of the century. Whether you are a manufacturer,
a technocrat, a trader, or a consultant, the need to differentiate
your companys offering is very critical for survival in todays
changing economy. The key lies in offering more valuedriven products
at more affordable prices. This is only possible with some technological
breakthrough from the conventional materials that the companies are
using today. With plastics, it is all about stretching possibilities.
Plastics and the Toy Industry
The concept of toys is as old as mankind itself.
Our ancestors built different objects to entertain and keep children
busy. This journey has seen various kinds of material used for this
purpose like wood, metal etc. With advancements, the need for more
safe and durable toys arose tremendously. Coupled with the technological
breakthrough and the industrial revolution throughout the world, manufacturing
of plastic moulded toys began in the early 20th century. The quality,
durability and cost effectiveness of these toys were far superior
to their metal or wooden counterparts. The acceptance of these toys
has grown so much that around half the toys made in the world today,
are made out of plastics. In fact not just toys, the application of
plastics has grown into manufacturing of kids furniture, playground
equipment and various other children related products as well; and
is still growing day-by-day. The requirement of safe, non-toxic, colourful
and durable products for the usage of young children has once again
propelled the growth of plastics in the area of toys, children furniture
and playground equipment.
