There is vast evolution in the usage of domestic appliances and consumer durables in South Eastern Countries and more so in India during the last ten years.


The consumer durable sector has developed significantly in the last decade. The growth rate is at least 8 to 10% every year. The major areas covered include kitchen machines, washing machines, refrigerators, electronic gadgets, entertainment articles besides the automobile sector, says P.Prabhakar Reddy, SBU Head – Plastic Moulding Division, Videocon International Ltd., Aurangabad.

* Can you please highlight trends that the Indian Consumer durables/appliances industry has seen in the 10 years? Is it any different when compared with the International market?
There is a tremendous change in the Indian industry as far as consumer durables and appliances are concerned. A decade ago this industry was enjoying the status of being a sellers market and the trend has now reversed to being a buyers market. The price trends are totally favorable to customers because of increase in competition due to influx of multi-nationals in the Indian market. As per the available statistics, the growth rate is 8 to 10 % per year. Definitely, the Indian market for this Industry has grown and is competing with the International market. Previously, Indian customer was looking at foreign made durables, which has reverse as a trend during the last 5 years. The reason being - everything is available with in the country at an affordable price for all income groups besides improved technology.

* Please highlight on the latest developments in this sector (Indian & Global) and which are the major growth areas of potential for consumable durables in India?
There is a vast evolution in the usage of domestic appliances and consumer durables in South Eastern Countries and more so in India during the last ten years. Traditional Indian customers have switched over from primitive type of house hold equipment to modern electronic and electrical gadgets. This is from Drawing room to Kitchen. So also in the Transportation areas this evolution has emerged at large. A typical example one can refer is mineral water usage in pet bottles from hygiene point of view. Usage of polymers will be more potential in the coming future which is more in the Western Countries.

* What is the role of plastics in the development of consumable durable/ appliances sector?
A lot. This sector has developed significantly in the last decade. The major areas covered include kitchen machines, washing machines, refrigerators, electronic gadgets, entertainment articles besides the automobile sector. Aircraft, shipping and railways are the major consumers of polymers.
