Plastics in Infrastructure
They Build it Better!

Plastics are making enormous contribution to many different aspects of infrastructure developments.

Worldwide, there is a major thrust on infrastructure de- velopment. Clear policies and regulatory frameworks are being put in place across the globe. Plastics industry which has been serving mankind in various sectors has also made enormous contribution to many different aspects of infrastructure developments. As we progress through the 21st century, plastic products are increasingly becoming the material of choice for achieving economic and environmental balance, as well as functional, design and specific needs.

Why Plastics? Plastics have a number of important characteristics which when exploited alone or together, make a significant contribution to our building and construction needs. l Strong and Durable: Plastics have an excellent strength to weight ratio and are thus able to meet many technical requirements fulfilled by heavy traditional materials. Their durability makes them ideal for long life applications and their resistance to corrosion and many chemicals reduces the wear and tear, further increasing the longevity.

Maintenance Free: Because of their durability and corrosion resistance, plastic products do not need any painting or protective coating etc.
Light Weight: Due to their light weight, plastic products contribute in saving man hours and energy during transportation, handling and installation.
Insulation: Plastics provide effective insulation for cold and heat, sound and electricity, thus helping in saving energy and reducing noise pollution.
Energy Efficient: Plastics building materials are effective in conserving energy. In a one year study, plastics building and construction materials saved 467.2 trillion Btu of energy over traditional materials – enough to meet the average energy needs of 4.6 million U.S. households.
Hygienic: The products stored, transported through systems made of plastics are always safe and hygienic and hence they are safely used not only for potable water transportation but also for food contact and medical applications.
