Display of Technology and Innovation by Rajoo at
Plastindia 2006
Fully supported by representatives of various European
and American automation systems suppliers at
the stand, Rajoo established its capability to integrate
world class systems in the Indian design and manufactured
sophisticated seven layer blown film line..
The seven layer blown film line operated smoothly
at the show, producing both nylon and EVOH based
barrier films and LD/LLD based lamination grade
films. The fully automated surface/gap/center 2100 mm
width winder producing 1,000 mm dia. rolls with automatic
roll change over established the top of the class
design. Christened - Multifoil RECF 2760-55/2100
IBC – the seven layer line with 2 x 60 mm grooved
feed extruders (inner and outer layer) and rest 5 x 55
smooth bore extruders was equipped with the 500 mm
INverted COnical Spiral Stack type die (INCOSS®).
The high output plant (550 kg/hour for non-barrier
films and 350 kg/hour for barrier films) used an ultrasonic
sensor based IBC System from D. R. Joseph of
USA. The plant was fully loaded with the highest level
of automation ever witnessed by the Asian industry.
Multi-component conveying and gravimetric dosing
system from Doteco, Italy and an Automatic Air Ring
( Smartlip) with capacitative thickness sensor from Octagon,
Germany and B & R processor based integrated
computerized supervisory control system. Incorporating
Corona treatment from the best manufacturer in the
world – Sherman of UK and Digital Centre Line based
web guiding system with width measurement from BST
Sayona..
Also on display was a 1.2 m dia. three layer INCOSS®
die with a matching Dual Lip Air Ring for a wide width
three layer plant to produce film for bulk packaging – container
liners, woven sack liners…. yet once again, a first
for the Asian industry.
With the ever increasing market acceptance of PP
as compared to PS for disposable containers, Rajoo
took another step forward in technology – a monolayer
sheet line with 90 mm extruder for PP using 50%
regrind – an output of 230 kg/hour. Sheet line incorporated
a Maag melt pump and a continuous diverter
type automatic screen changer and thickness monitoring
system from Folitec, Germany. Clarity and precise
thickness control was very well appreciated by
visitors.
To go hand in hand with the sheet line was a
thermoformer, acknowledged as the best thermoformer
in the industry today. With minimum mechanical parts,
the hydraulically operated, computer programmable
thermoformer used a 21 cavity mould operating at 25
strokes/minute producing nearly 30,000 glasses per
hour.
Budget 2006-07: A
Welcome Gesture
says AIPMA
AIPMA said that it was a welcome
gesture by the Finance Minister to
reduce import duty on commodity plastics
from 10% to 5%. This would help
in stability of local polymers prices. This
reduction of customs duty should have
been extended to all other polymers
most of which are imported.
The burden of SAD @ 4% will be
an additional burden. However, there is
some relief as the same is Centavable.
The industry was eagerly awaiting
reduction in the rate of excise duty and
is very disappointed as no reduction of
duty has been announced. The production
of plastic is expected to increase
from 40 lakh tonnes to 120 lakh tonnes.
Reduction in excise duty would have
helped in boosting production.
Finance Minister in his budget
speech has acknowledged the reduction
/ rationalization has always improved
revenue collection.

Banning Plastic Bags less than 50 Micron
is Uncalled for says AIPMA
The news on 28th February 2006 appeared in all news papers was shocking,
unexpected, unthoughtful and as such is completely against the
interest of plastic industry. Prior this, on 7th February 2006 there was a
news item stating that below 50 microns plastic bags will be banned for
which AIPMA had sent protest letter along with the industry view and
adverse effects that will cause the industry if 50 microns thickness is
benchmarked by the Government of Maharashtra. In fact the industry was
expecting a soft decision towards the plastic industry in view of numerous
representations that has been made by The All India Plastics Manufacturers’ Association on behalf of the industry right from the day one after the
deluge in July 2005.
AIPMA met the Hon’ble Chief Minister on 31st October 2005 and explained
the implications of banning all types of plastic bags. Grievances
were expressed that in the 4 member committee formed by the Government
of Maharashtra neither comprised the industry man nor the environment
experts. The first Task Force at centre under the Chairmanship of
Dilip Biswas, Central Pollution Control Board in 1996/97 plastic industry
was represented on the committee by both the technical and the national
manufacturers body. The implementation Monitoring Committee at centre,
all three members were involved. When the Parliament constituted
National Committee under Justice Ranganath Mishra for dealing with plastic
bags waste disposal issues, there was a representative from the
industry. It is shocking that such vital decision was taken by the Government
without getting the industry experts involved. It was repeatedly represented
before the Government that the imposing ban on all plastic bags,
the Government only diverts attention of public from the real cause nonimplementation
of Ministry of Environment and Forest’s rule and inadequate
collection and disposal of ever-growing quantum of garbage.
Therefore this ordinance to ban plastic bags up to 50 microns by the
state will have disastrous consequences without solving problem of litter
and solid waste management which is the real cause & concern, said
AIPMA.
The plastic industry is very much disappointed with the news that plastic
bags will be banned immediately without even giving the small manufacturers
or even the big set-ups to dispose all the pending stocks. Overnight
banning the plastic bags will not only throw the industry out of gear registering
voluminous loss to general public but also to state government.
Even the proposal of the plastic industry to printing / self embossing on
every carry bags the details of the manufacture certifying the size and
thickness to ensure use of 20 microns and above plastic carry bags cannot
be implemented overnight. If the Government is serious to streamline use
of plastic bags, the industry must be given appropriate time instead of
bringing out the ordinance overnight.
In past, the industry sat with the government to implement ban on use
of plastic carry bags below 20 microns to provide a viable solution to
overcome the littering habits of citizens and promote recycling in a sustainable
way.
We are sure this will positively help government to regulate the use of
plastic carry bags.
....contd.
