Polyether Sulfone (PES) For Baby Feeding Bottles
This grade has also been recently approved by
Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). PES is now
included in the list of raw material approved for
baby feeding bottle application in India under
standard IS 14625. On the International front
this grade is under FDA Compliance norms.
Traditionally, Polypropylene (PP),
Polycarbonate (PC) & Glass are
used for manufacturing baby
feeding bottles. However, in the recent
years, there has been a shift in some volumes to high-end PES made bottles
due to the following reasons:
* PP bottles loose their transparency
over a period of time lessening their
active use life. Also when subjected to boiling water sterilsation cycles,
PP bottles have a limited shelf-life.
* PC bottles on the other hand are
more expensive than PP bottles, are
transparent and pass the sterilisation
cycles perfectly. However, the problem
with PC is the leaching out of
Bisphenol A (an ingredient from
which PC is manufactured). This
leaching out of Bisphenol A generates
a dimmer toxin called as Dioxane,
which is harmful to the food
contents inside the bottle.
* To overcome these difficulties PES
is found as the best bet, which is also
amber transparent, passes boiling
water / sterilisation tests successfully
and also does not contain
Bisphenol A and thus there is no
leaching out of any toxins.
Market Demand
A special grade of PES is available,
which is typically designed for baby
feeding bottle applications. This grade
meets all the stringent requirements for
baby feeding bottle application, which
includes transparency, colour, surface
quality etc.
This grade has also been recently
approved by Bureau of Indian Standards
(BIS). PES is now included in the list

Exports to countries such as Korea,
Japan & Taiwan is a big opportunity for
this material. Currently approx 500
MTs of PES world wide is being used
for manufacturing baby feeding bottles.
